The IBM SDK for Node.js – z/OS Version 8 is now available — and with no charge. The release brings many significant improvements to the z/OS JavaScript community including increased performance, security, and zero license charge.

IBM SDK for Node.js – z/OS Version 8 highlights

Higlights of the V8 release include:

  • Updated npm 6.4.1 (Node.js package manager), which includes standardized lockfiles for cross-package-manager compatibility and automatic saving of newly installed packages without explicitly adding the –save flag
  • N-API provides an ABI-stable abstraction over native JavaScript APIs, ensuring smooth migration of native add-ons modules across Node.js major releases
  • Compile ASCII format, the most popular format for external npm modules. Previously the C++ compiler included with Node.js – z/OS could only compile C++ add-ons in EBCDIC format.
  • The experimental async/await, which is a modern approach that allows you to write asynchronous code that looks like synchronous code
  • The buffer module is initialized to zeros providing better security against potential vulnerabilities

Why Node.js?

Simplicity: JavaScript is simple, powerful, and lightweight with support for full-stack development. Node.js encourages agile practices with modular development and an ecosystem of close to a million npm packages. It requires less written code, which results in fewer bugs, more streamlined testing, and quicker delivery of Node.js applications.

Why Node.js on Z?

Clients gain all the strengths, security and reliability of the mainframe by deploying Node.js applications on IBM Z. IBM SDK for Node.js – z/OS can take advantage of the co-location of your data and existing applications on IBM Z to significantly increase throughput and reduce response time. Easily and securely orchestrate APIs while controlling which data will be exposed, and keeping all confidential data secure inside the Z platform.

IBM uses IBM SDK for Node.js – z/OS too!

The success of IBM co-founded open source project Zowe, a set of modern cloud-like interfaces to interact with z/OS, relies on SDK for Node.js – z/OS for its web back-end interface.

IBM SDK for Node.js – z/OS has a zero license charge, IBM Software Subscription and Support (S&S) is optional.
